I managed to find 3 shots from yesterdays mucking around in the woods by the Dewerstone and River Plym that I'm semi happy with. I really *really* struggle with woodland stuff.... I can see the shots when I'm there and they look great on the back of the camera, but when I get back they all just tend to look like an utter mess to me... some cracking autumnal colours around at the moment...

Wyscombe or Westcombe???? There seems to be two spellings of the name, which one is right? Does anyone care? So yeah, this was from last night, which you would have seen from my insta-story spam from yesterday... sorry about that! I've been planning to come here for the past 7 or 8 years, but it's a bit of a trek (3 hours) and a bit out of the way (Plymouth) when I'm normally travelling down to Cornwall, so I've been putting it off. This week was different, I've booked a week off work and I'm trying to fill the days up with some photography trips out (Kingfishers tomorrow!) , so I thought I'd shoot here and then head to the River Plym and the Dewerstone as well. I'll have a bash at those photo's later, but I'm a bit crap at woodland photography so you might not see those! Back to this shot, Just after I took this shot I got utterly soaked by a rogue wave, right up to my waist, which meant the 20 minute walk back involved a lot of sloshing around in my boots which was fun. I'd started out here in the morning, but the tide was too low. I kind of knew that would be the case on the way down but I thought I'd use it as a reccy to get the lie of the land and work out if I wanted to shoot here or Arymer cove (next door). The main issue was that there was a bit of an onshore gust, which was great for producing some nice waves but not so good for the spray which was continuously coating the front of the lens... I think I went through a billion wipes over the course of a couple of hours...

Soho at night. A handful of shots from yesterdays wanderings... These are pretty much all shot from the hip as I walk by - no one really knows I'm taking their photo... I've almost got the hang of making sure everything's in focus and relatively straight and in frame... although that's where 28mm comes in handy! I ended up having to push these fairly far to get all the details out. I tend to under expose by at least a stop and half with this sort of thing, mainly to stop the highlights completely blowing out. Yes you end up with noisy shadows (especially at ISO 12800!), but you can kind of hide that (in the main) with a judicious use of Lightroom's AI remove noise feature and it's also the one time Instagram's crappy image size isn't a hinderance (just don't zoom in on any!) It was pretty amazing seeing how many other photographers were out and about doing the same sort of thing... it felt at times like photographers outweighed their subjects 2/1. There also seemed to be a couple of groups clearly inspired by Bruce Gilden, hanging out on street corners blinding passers by with their speedlights, grabbing portrait shots! Is this normal for Soho or was it just because it was Friday night and Halloween? Search me... when I used to live and work up here I only tended to come to Soho to sit in the gardens and chill after a trip to Cex (when it was good) at Rathbone place to pickup some import N64/PSX games or comics from Forbidden Planet during my lunch break... Oh yeah, I also got utterly soaked and ended up doing 40k steps... which was slightly more than expected as the gates for Hyde park were shut for some reason (supposed to be locked at midnight, not 21:45.. the bastards), so I ended up having to speed walk round the entire outside from Lancaster Gate to the bloody Royal Albert Hall to meet my Daughter after the gig... #soho #soholondon #streetphotography #sorefeet #nightphotography #london

The shard - Yesterday was mainly spent wandering around central London whilst my daughter was at an Inhaler gig at the Royal Albert Hall. With almost 40k steps and several bouts of torrential rain it made for some interesting results. This is shot from the Lookout. As free publicly open viewing spaces go it's pretty basic, with the only facility being a disabled toilet. View wise you're restricted to either a view south over the Thames or to the West. They're cool with you using a small tripod if you want, which is nice, however because of how they've done the glass I really wouldn't bother. The outer glass is a good 6"-8" away from the internal glass. This means when it's starts to get a bit darker outside the windows all fill up with reflections from the internal lights. Not only that you get reflections of the lights that are outside on the glass as well... at one point I had a reflection of the Tower Bridge lights right on top of the Millennium bridge... which ruins pretty much all your shots. Now normally you'd use a lens skirt or a black jumper or something to stop the reflections, but because of the distance between the two panes of glass the usual trick have no real effect unfortunately. 3 more shots from yesterdays Wiltshire wanderings. There's probably an hour or so between these two shots. Weirdly it's not somewhere I've really thought of coming to before as I normally head down to coast on bumble around in Dorset, no idea why as there are some pretty amazing locations around here for Landscape photography...I'll have to come back for a scoot around on my bike at some point! (Deleted the first post so I could add a 3rd image)

A not so early start to the day today.. well it WAS early, but not CRAZY early... anyway... The Vale of Pewsey, which is somewhere I haven't been to since about 1987 when my Nan lived here for a few years. I vaguely remember getting dragged around the hills as a 12 year old, wishing I was out on my Skateboard and I have a memory of skating a drainage ditch in Pewsey that me and my brother found one day... So yeah, this is the view from Knapp Hill. I'd actually gone to photograph the small copse of trees at the base of Knap Hill (Will post those shots up at some point) , but as the sun rose it started lighting up the distant landscape. This is a crop of a huuuuge panorama that's around 50k pixels wide! This is about 20K and makes Lightroom cry, even though I've got 128GB of ram and a 3080 in the machine.

After the previous days misty goodness on the way to the office I thought I'd take the camera with me yesterday... the light wasn't quite as spectacular, but it'll do!

Probably the last shot from last weekend up in Glen Coe, this is just before the meeting of the three waters, directly underneath the three sisters. There's no real path to this spot, you can park at Jimmy Saville's old house (Or brave the walk up the road, avoiding the camper vans and coaches), hop over the armco barrier and scramble your way down towards the river. It's another spot I've been to a few times over the years but I've never been that happy with the shots I've got, although this is probably the best so far (Although still not amazing). I think this could really do with some snow on the tops of the 3 (well 2 of them) sisters and the water level being a bit higher.

Glen Coe Sunset - I took this from about half way up Am Bodach and because of the conditions it's a blend of multiple shots. It was super windy up there so to get the heather and grass looking sharp and not a horrible blurry mess I had to crank the shutter speed up to around 1/1600 sec, which meant I was shooting at f/4 and around ISO1600. That meant that my depth of field wasn't particularly great, even at 24mm, so It's basically one shot for the heather, one for the grass and 1 for the rest. As the sun started to dip I cranked up the aperture to f/22 to get the sunburst effect which I think works fairly well, although out of the two shots I much prefer the one with the light bloom over the sunburst.

Castle Kilchurn Sunrise - So at what I think was probably my 6th attempt I have finally managed to get an image that I'm relatively happy with! Ideally I'd like a bit more light on the mountains on the right and some lovely mist on the water, but you can't have everything.. oh and some snow on the peaks would be nice.... It's a bit of a honey pot location, but I had a full day of Skating photography ahead of me followed by a nice 9 hour drive back to the South coast, so my initial plan of climbing Stob Beinn a Chrulaiste for sunrise went out the window. I was actually camping in the car park for the Castle whilst I was up there so I had the added bonus of not having to travel far when I woke up, although it had been pretty cold overnight, with temps dropping to just above 0 deg. So when I woke up at 2am in my Tentbox It's safe to say things were a bit chilly!
