You may have noticed that I’m pretty rubbish at updating this webpage. I do have an Instagram account, that I’m also rubbish at updating, however I’m generally slightly less rubbish at updating it , so you will find it is far more up to date than this site, so here’s a feed from it!
I got fairly lucky with the light down at Kimmeridge this afternoon.
I'd checked the forecast and it looked so-so and on the way down it suddenly got very gloomy, so I was kind of going on a wing and a prayer.
After a very slow wander around to these ledges we were treated to a 10 minute or so bout of amazingly warm side light, 15 minutes or so before sunset... at one point it looked like the sun might light up the clouds as well, but we were pushing out luck a bit as there was a large bank of cloud that it dipped behind.
The tide was just about right, not too low and not too high. I got fairly soaked, as did the camera, so I've just finished giving it a wash down with a fairly generous amount of Isopropyl Alcohol.
I really really hate walking on these ledges. They're made of possibly the most slippery surface known to man and I always tend to end up my arse at some point.
Some more London wandering photos.... my wife managed to persuade me to drive her and my father in-law up to Hammersmith last weekend so they could go to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy live show (apparently very good, but the towel is 50 quid, so take your own!) as there were rail works on the Waterloo line as per usual.
Only a short walk this time so I just ended up following my usual route from Bank, to the Barbican, down to St Pauls and along South Bank and over to Westminster.
err, that's it...
Just going through some unprocessed shots and I have these... 2 from Cornwall and 1 from Savernake Forest.

A small handful of Kingfisher shots. It looks like there were at least two females visiting us as the markings are slightly different on them, not that I'm a birding expert... They would show up pretty much bang on every 45 minutes, so over the course of the day we had around 10 visits in total.
The light was pretty pants, so these were pretty much all shot at ISO 12800 so that I could get at least 1/2000 sec at f/6.3. Lightrooms AI noise reduction seems to work wonders on these!
Another shot from Mondays trip to Westcombe. I didn't think I'd do anything with this image as the light was quite harsh, but I kind of like it.
A bunch of shots from yesterdays 17km wander around Savernake Forest. My legs are covered in cuts and scratches, my feet are a bit sore (not helped by this mornings 10km run) and I've got a bunch of photos I don't really know what to do with! I love looking at woodland photography but I really struggle with it. I guess a bit like everyone who tries their hand at it I struggle to see the wood for the tree's...
It's a cracking place, much better (in my opinion) than the New Forest... there are so many ancient oaks and some of them are hidden way... you'd never know they were there, so a massive thanks to Philip Selby, who I met half way round who pointed out all the secret little spots and took me to the hidden spooky oak tree (///loitering.craftsmen.perfect if You're looking for it)
A great (but tiring) day out... I was planning on going to Burnham Beaches today, but in the end I couldn't be arsed and decided to stay in bed!
Cornwall next week for the last Vert competition of the season.... I'm hoping to get some seascape photography done whilst I'm down there!
Thought I'd try something a little bit different with the Kingfishers at @otterbourne.hides.studio
I've got a fair few shots to go through after a fun filled day at Pete's place, but I'm thinking of continuing to make the most of my week off by heading to to either Savanak Forest or Burnham Beeches tomorrow or possibly Friday, so I'll edit the rest at the weekend as I'm going to sit back now and watch some Grand Designs and chill!
I managed to find 3 shots from yesterdays mucking around in the woods by the Dewerstone and River Plym that I'm semi happy with. I really *really* struggle with woodland stuff....
I can see the shots when I'm there and they look great on the back of the camera, but when I get back they all just tend to look like an utter mess to me... some cracking autumnal colours around at the moment...
Wyscombe or Westcombe????
There seems to be two spellings of the name, which one is right? Does anyone care?
So yeah, this was from last night, which you would have seen from my insta-story spam from yesterday... sorry about that!
I've been planning to come here for the past 7 or 8 years, but it's a bit of a trek (3 hours) and a bit out of the way (Plymouth) when I'm normally travelling down to Cornwall, so I've been putting it off. This week was different, I've booked a week off work and I'm trying to fill the days up with some photography trips out (Kingfishers tomorrow!) , so I thought I'd shoot here and then head to the River Plym and the Dewerstone as well.
I'll have a bash at those photo's later, but I'm a bit crap at woodland photography so you might not see those!
Back to this shot, Just after I took this shot I got utterly soaked by a rogue wave, right up to my waist, which meant the 20 minute walk back involved a lot of sloshing around in my boots which was fun.
I'd started out here in the morning, but the tide was too low. I kind of knew that would be the case on the way down but I thought I'd use it as a reccy to get the lie of the land and work out if I wanted to shoot here or Arymer cove (next door).
The main issue was that there was a bit of an onshore gust, which was great for producing some nice waves but not so good for the spray which was continuously coating the front of the lens... I think I went through a billion wipes over the course of a couple of hours...
Soho at night.
A handful of shots from yesterdays wanderings...
These are pretty much all shot from the hip as I walk by - no one really knows I'm taking their photo... I've almost got the hang of making sure everything's in focus and relatively straight and in frame... although that's where 28mm comes in handy!
I ended up having to push these fairly far to get all the details out. I tend to under expose by at least a stop and half with this sort of thing, mainly to stop the highlights completely blowing out. Yes you end up with noisy shadows (especially at ISO 12800!), but you can kind of hide that (in the main) with a judicious use of Lightroom's AI remove noise feature and it's also the one time Instagram's crappy image size isn't a hinderance (just don't zoom in on any!)
It was pretty amazing seeing how many other photographers were out and about doing the same sort of thing... it felt at times like photographers outweighed their subjects 2/1.
There also seemed to be a couple of groups clearly inspired by Bruce Gilden, hanging out on street corners blinding passers by with their speedlights, grabbing portrait shots!
Is this normal for Soho or was it just because it was Friday night and Halloween?
Search me... when I used to live and work up here I only tended to come to Soho to sit in the gardens and chill after a trip to Cex (when it was good) at Rathbone place to pickup some import N64/PSX games or comics from Forbidden Planet during my lunch break...
Oh yeah, I also got utterly soaked and ended up doing 40k steps... which was slightly more than expected as the gates for Hyde park were shut for some reason (supposed to be locked at midnight, not 21:45.. the bastards), so I ended up having to speed walk round the entire outside from Lancaster Gate to the bloody Royal Albert Hall to meet my Daughter after the gig...

The shard - Yesterday was mainly spent wandering around central London whilst my daughter was at an Inhaler gig at the Royal Albert Hall. With almost 40k steps and several bouts of torrential rain it made for some interesting results.
This is shot from the Lookout. As free publicly open viewing spaces go it's pretty basic, with the only facility being a disabled toilet.
View wise you're restricted to either a view south over the Thames or to the West.
They're cool with you using a small tripod if you want, which is nice, however because of how they've done the glass I really wouldn't bother.
The outer glass is a good 6"-8" away from the internal glass. This means when it's starts to get a bit darker outside the windows all fill up with reflections from the internal lights. Not only that you get reflections of the lights that are outside on the glass as well... at one point I had a reflection of the Tower Bridge lights right on top of the Millennium bridge... which ruins pretty much all your shots.
Now normally you'd use a lens skirt or a black jumper or something to stop the reflections, but because of the distance between the two panes of glass the usual trick have no real effect unfortunately.
Anyway, here's a picture of the Shard.
3 more shots from yesterdays Wiltshire wanderings. There's probably an hour or so between these two shots.
Weirdly it's not somewhere I've really thought of coming to before as I normally head down to coast on bumble around in Dorset, no idea why as there are some pretty amazing locations around here for Landscape photography...I'll have to come back for a scoot around on my bike at some point!
(Deleted the first post so I could add a 3rd image)
